Puti Islet

Introduction

Puti Islet derives its name from the Bodhi Trees, reflecting the story of Sakyamuni Buddha attaining enlightenment under such a tree. Situated in the Bohai Bay, the islet is part of the Tangshan Bay International Tourism Island in Hebei province, China. Covering a total area of 4.4 square kilometers, it measures 3 kilometers from north to south and 1 kilometer from east to west. Positioned 100 kilometers from Qinhuangdao city and 90 kilometers from Beidaihe, Puti Islet is renowned as the largest island in North China. The island is a sanctuary of biodiversity, hosting many plant species and boasting a natural vegetation coverage exceeding 98%, earning it the nickname "a natural zoo suspended in the sea". Among its remarkable features are historical Buddhist sites like the Chaoyin Temple and the ruins of Chaoyang Nunnery.

Geography

Puti Islet accounts for 4.4 square kilometers. Its dimensions stretch 3 kilometers north to south and 1 kilometer east to west. Adjacent to the Beidaihe New District of Qinhuangdao city, the island is less than 90 kilometers from both Nandaihe and Beidaihe. The island enjoys a warm temperate marine monsoon climate, characterized by a mild summer without extreme heat; July's average temperature is 24.2 degrees Celsius, slightly cooler than Qinhuangdao by 0.2 degrees. The island's climate is influenced by land and sea breezes, with temperature fluctuations that make it an ideal destination for summer vacations and heat escape.

Tourist Attraction

Puti Islet is a rich repository of flora and fauna, designated as one of Hebei province's two ecological tourism demonstration zones and recognized as an international bird-watching base. The island supports over 400 animal species and 168 plant species. During the spring, summer, and autumn months, the island is enveloped in vibrant floral displays, with birds singing and cicadas buzzing, offering an immersive natural experience that evokes a sense of returning to nature. The island's unique characteristics are encapsulated in the concept of the "Eight Wonders of the Islet":

1. Desolate Islet: The northern part is dominated by grasslands, meadows, and shrubs, creating a desolate landscape that evokes a primeval and isolated experience due to the sparse human presence.

2. Marine Islet: The island is a remnant erosional landform shaped by tidal action, providing a quintessential marine island experience where visitors can indulge in seafood, seaside living, maritime exploration, and ocean vistas.

3. Sandy Islet: Characterized by sandy terrain and numerous dunes, the island offers activities like sand bathing, sand sculpting, and sunbathing due to its flat topography.

4. Large Islet: With its dimensions of 3 kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in width, Puti Islet stands as North China's longest island and is home to China's unique dual coastline.

5. Green Islet: The island is covered with lush greenery, featuring diverse trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, resulting in a vegetation coverage rate of 98%.

6. Bird Islet: The island's dense vegetation and sparse human activity, coupled with ample fresh and saltwater sources and abundant food, make it a sanctuary for over 400 bird species, solidifying its reputation as a true "Bird Islet."

7. Sun and Moon Islet: The southeastern part of the island features a crescent-shaped Moon Islet. On certain days, visitors can witness the spectacular phenomenon of "three suns shining together" or "three moons illuminating together," where multiple reflections of the sun or moon appear simultaneously on the sky, sea, and beach.

8. Buddhist Islet: Historical Buddhist sites include the ruins of the Chaoyang Nunnery, dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and the Chaoyin Temple, from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The former retains a solitary stele and debris, while the latter houses five back halls with Buddha statues and intricately carved 500 Arhats, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship and the historical prominence of Buddhism on the island.
